Jesus, Take the Wheel

A group of interfaith leaders has filed a lawsuit against the South Carolina legislature for producing “I believe” license plates after Florida tried and failed to do so.  To some, the plates, which include the confessional slogan as well as the graphic of a cross and stained glass window, are objectionable on the grounds that they violate the First Amendment’s establishment clause (and, as some say, are a tacky means to display one’s faith).  Although private groups are allowed to produce their own license plates if they have sufficient funding or preorders, the fact that the lieutenant governor has put up the deposit and that normally such groups cannot have slogans on the plates suggest a deliberate promotion of Christianity.  In the interest of constitutionality, I would like to propose the following plate designs to be made available to those of other faiths in the Palmetto State (as well as the secular yet equally life-affirming “I Believe That It Is Butter”):
